Random quote: "Dar ir šiandien mes mėgstame pasididžiuoti garsiąja lietuviška tolerancija, kuri betgi pražudė imperiją ir vos nepražudė pačios tautos." Vytautas Alantas (1902 - 1990)

Subject: What is/was the function of a "kvieslys"

Within a week the same etymon has come up again, first in QUITTSCHAU and now in QUESELEIT.
KVIESLYS in Kurschat's dictionary is
1. der Gast-, Hochzeitsbitter, Platzmeister
2. der Brautwerber, Heiratsvermittler
There's KVIESLELE, "der bunte Stab des Hochzeitsbitters"
KVIESLIAUTI means "Gast- oder Hochzeitsbitter sein".
It seems in a Lithuanian village community somebody had this function from which the surnname is derived: an official go-between between bride and bridegroom who also invited people with a KVIESLELE to the wedding. Does this still exist?
