"The Christian glories in the death of the pagan…
To inflict death or to die for Christ is no sin,
but rather, an abundant claim to glory.
In the first case one gains for Christ, and in
the second one gains Christ himself. The Lord
freely accepts the death of the foe who has
offended him, and yet more freely gives himself
for the consolation of his fallen knight…"
Fulcher of Chartres made his point when he
summed up the theme of his chronicle thus:
"I carefully arranged the deeds, most
distinguished in the Lord, of the armies of
the Franks who, by God's ordination, made
a pilgrimage to Jerusalem". The unsuspecting
reader might conclude that the chronicle
would describe the activities of a number
of pious Christians who had traveled to
Jerusalem. The pious language, however,
masked a bloody campaign which ended with
beheading of 10, 000 people in the confines
of Solomon's Temple. For doing this
crusaders earned the guarantee of salvation".
