Gal ne visai i temą, bet germanams buvo labai gerai žinomas mitas apie šlubą kalvį Wieland, kuris žiauriai atkeršijo savo skriaudėjui. Tas Wieland dar buvo vadinamas Weland, Welent. J. Grimmas, tas kur pasakas raše ir ne tik , siejo jį su velniu, nes velnią vokiečiai viduramžiaias greta Teufel arba Dewil (nuo Diabolus) dar dažnai vadino Valantu arba Velantu. Čia pagal Grimą nuo senos germaniškos šaknies "vel-" , t.y. "klastingas".
