Linking Gedimin or whoever to a present-day surname and not to an individual is a major flaw. Somebody's great grandmother might have been unfaithful and in reality he is a descendant of Brasauskas and not of Banalauskas. And, after all, going back 800 years means you have hundreds of thousands of ancestors.
