Linking Gedimin or whoever to a present-day surname and not to an individual is a major flaw. Somebody's great grandmother might have been unfaithful and in reality he is a descendant of Brasauskas and not of Banalauskas. And, after all, going back 800 years means you have hundreds of thousands of ancestors.

Lutz Szemkus

Present-day surname has 300 - 450 yr roots. It comes now just about ancestors from one direct paternal line, which shows hereditary link to your real forefather.
