2. In the times of Ludwig Rhese Curonian ethnicity was gone with the wind some two centuries ago.

You are showing your ignorance. It is known that so-called Spit-Curonians (Nehrungkuhren) , a people with self-name Kursenieki and Curonians are the same people. The term Kuršininkai that is used in lithuanian, that probably misleading you is artificial, is created by linguists and is used in linguistics to separate Spit-Curonians from so-called Old Curonians. Term is used only for convenience.

"В качестве заключения следует отметить равнозначность этнонимов «курши» (лит. kuršiai, лтш. kurši, нем. die Kuhren) и «куршининкай/курсениеки» (лит. kuršininkai, лтш. kursenieki) в этногра-фическом плане, несмотря на то что вымерший куршский язык и язык куршей Косы не связаны генетически напрямую"

"In conclusion it should be noted equivalency of ethnonyms "Curonians" (lit. kuršiai, lat. Kurši, deu. Die Kuhren) and "kurshininkai/kursenieki" (Lit. kuršininkai, lat. Kursenieki ) in the Ethnographicview, despite the fact that the extinct Curonian language and language of Curonian Spit Curonians not genetically related directly"

P.S. By the way, despite the fact that Rhese was Curonian, itself surname Rhese is German orgin:
