Может Ibicus прокоментирует - он интересовался латинью средневековья. 

Да, я наконец-то нашел в своих электронных залежах Mediae latinitatis lexicon minus, J.F.Niermeyer. Значение gens сильно отличается от классической латыни. Вот что там пишут на стр. 466:
