Ta lotyniška ir tarptautiška „kolona“ kilusi iš lietuviško žodžio „kuolas“. Tiksliau kuolų aibiskaitos: kuoluo, kuoluonia (kuolonė) — kolonia. Reiškia kolonadą — statinį iš keleto ar keliolikos šulų.
